A Fun Footrace through Sierra La Plata
Saturday August 3, 2002

The Kennebec Challenge was initiated by Ernst Baer in 1993.  After 6 runnings, the race was dropped from the calendar in 1999.  Hopes for the return of this race in 2000, were dashed by the U.S. Forest Service, however, there seems to be a good chance that they will issue a 5-year permit in 2001.    It's a beautiful course, rising up La Plata Canyon via Cumberland Basin, through the "Notch", then over the south col of Snowstorm Peak to descend via Columbus Basin, and return down the canyon road to the start.  Approximate elevation of the course ranges from 9600' (at the start/finish to 12,200 at the col).
